A lot of people talk about improvisation and its relationship to language: learning scales and arps is like learning words; licks, sentences; solos, paragraphs.

Very few compare improvisation to chess. The aspiring chess player learns by four basic activities: solving problems; reviewing master games; playing; and reviewing his play with a coach. Taken in turn:

Solving problems: arpeggios, scales, chord scales, etc.

reviewing master games: transcribing solos of great players (let's see how they do it);

playing: duh! Very Happy

reviewing play with coach: recording and listening to your work.

Any other chess players out there?
