I have owned and played more guitars than I can count. My situation is that I have moved around from mentor to mentor and style to style. So when I was trying to play Allman Brothers, I wanted a Strat, so I could do volume swells. When focused on jazz, I got a big jazz box. Then I focused on Jeff Beck, so I needed a trem bar -- back to the strat.

But now I am playing an Eastman 335 clone. I really like it because it is amazingly versatile instrument. It will do anything, except it is hard to do swells (you can fake it with a volume pedal like Roben does). I think it's a great instrument for someone that hasn't settled into a particular mentor / group of mentors. Like a J bass, you can get a variety of tones.

What do others think? Is it best to get a single, versatile instrument, which may not give you the optimal tone for a given style, or is it necessary to have G.A.S. and have multiple instruments?

That's easy peasy - Tele.
Specifically chambered Tele with humbucker in neck position.
More specifically G&L ASAT Bluesboy Semihollow.
More specifically my G&L ASAT.
Also my Forshage is not bad - especially with two humbucker
that you can split and extra single coil in the middle. You get
Gib and Fen with a hint of PRS in one guit. Not very hollowy's
tho - but Chris said he had requests and was designing semiH one.
I especially started appreciating spliitable pups after getting that
AC Plus Booster OD - two channels and several pup combinations
you can growl or wail or just grit yer teeth - whatever is yer fancy.
