Jazz Kats,

I had some fun tonight recording, among other things, a fresh rendition of Charlie Parker's classic Billie's Bounce. I've always played it in the concert key of F, but decided to try it in Bb for a change.

Five chorus solo, with plenty of single-line clichés, chord punches, double-stops, octaves, and language gleaned from Oscar, Bird, Benson, Wes, Garland, and others.

To check it out, click here. Hope you enjoy it! Til next time...

Very good playing. I can hear some of the licks from Hank Garland, one of the first jazz LP I bought

Fantastic

That is swingin'! Did I hear "Wes Does Pop" at the end?

Larry,

Thanks! Glad you guys are enjoying the track, and yes... you're right on the $$ with your reference to that octave chorus tribute based on one of my dad's favorite repetitive horn licks.

It wasn't the first time I've used it, nor will it be the last. I figure if my long list of mentors, including Wes and Pop, can repeat their favorite clichés in so many solos, why not me or anyone else? Very Happy

One of the biggest myths in jazz improv is that you should never repeat yourself. That philosophy would eliminate all of my favorite artists, because it's their trademark moves that successfully define their personalities and the message that they bring to the table. All for now...

Mark,

Cool man!!! Bb is a nice key for Billie's Bounce. I've heard many of those licks from previous lessons.
