I just bought a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe last weekend. Well OK - perhaps
it is not top of the line tube amp and maybe a bit too "Fendery bright"
for jazz. But after not owning tube amp for 2 years I am amazed how
truly inspiring this thing is. Since I got it I play it an hour or two every
day and I noticed I play a bit less of "lotsoff notes - mostly useless"
type of noodling but try instead to play things that SOUND good - no
matter how many notes are played. It also makes playing with records
so much easier - dunno why but it seems easier to pick up licks when
you play thru HRD. I deal with brightness by running it thru Xotic
RC Booster pedal. I may also change preamp tubes to 12AT7 - but I will
get attenuator first - and see how the sond changes when you run it
wide open (you cannot really do it with 40W HRD without attenuator -
it would blow your head off - this thing is LOUD!). |

Great point. The best thing about having good equipment is often how it makes the player feel about his/her own playing. I am not surprised to hear that getting a new piece of gear changed the way you play -- I've had that experience myself. |
