I can get a jazz tone out of my jazz setup (big archtop, Acoustic Image amp, raezers edge cab), but sometimes I have difficulty getting a good jazz sound when I have a rock setup (ES-335 and Marshall). I try to work with the neck pickup, back off on the tone, and go on the clean channel, with the mid set a little high. Any suggestions? |

Good question Lenny.
I've had decent tone come from 335's with a little tone tweaking but I suspect your trouble is coming from the Marshall. Not knowing what unit you have, they most often come with Celestion drivers. Often very mid heavy. Even though they say their vintage 30's and 75's are good for jazz. Any jazz player that isn't tone deaf would probably argue otherwise. LOL
First thing I would try is dropping the mid's if you can. If it's a closed cabinet design setup, you may end up with resonance you'll have a hard time fighting with. _________________

I always have a great jazz tone from my old Gibson amp. and when i try to duplicate it with other amps fender, mesa boogie, i find myself always turning the mids down or off. the old gibson does not have a mid control. for me it is no mids. however, i sometimes run my fenders with the bright switch on and treble at 4, bass 6 or 7, and control the exact tone on the guitar. having the treble on, on the amp adds a little definition to the note/bloom etc. while still keeping a nicely defined tone.
try it. _________________ Peace |

I sold my 335 - even though it had mahogany neck it was still
brighter than I wanted. Then I bought one of those plywood d'Angelicos
couple years ego - Excel EXS-1
http://dangelicodirect.biz/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DG&Product_Code=EXL-1&Category_Code=ESA
when d'Angelico was selling them for $800 and man that thing was BRIGHT.
Friend of mine told me to replace the stock pup with true Armstrong one
and difference was tremendous. Still - it is bright guitar.
I play thru Fender HRD and coumple solid states amps - one of them
is Yamaha G100 - again those are bright amps. I usually put Xotic
RC Booster before the amp and that for me does the trick. And I play
with thick picks. Try RC Booster - you may like it. |
