When you think of blues influenced players, Wes, Kenny Burrell, Grant Greene, and George Benson immediately come to mind. Who are your favorite blues-influenced players? |

Ummm... John Scofield. Perhaps - I have bunch of his albums with Medeski
Martin & Wood and he can be quite funky. Charlie Christian - of course.
Herb Ellis had a great blues album "Nothing But the Blues". And myself.
On a good day |

Bobby Broom is another great player. Check out "The Deep Blue Organ Trio". I believe Henry Johnson has recorded with these guys also.
A few more that I like a lot.. Gatemouth Brown, Alex Schultz, Danny Caron, Billy Butler, Oscar Moore (Nat Cole Trio) and Johnny Moore(Charles Brown) |

Gatemouth was great. Heard him several times here in Austin in last
years of his life. Very beautiful sounding band - round, full and LOUD.
It breaks my heart thinking how Katrina robbed that man of his entire
life - destroyed his house and washed away all his instruments and all
memorabilia from his career. He moved to Austin after that and I emailed
his manager telling him that I owned one of his old stage guitars (HB35)
and I would gladly give it to him along with custom shop Firebird I had at
that time - just so he can keep playing. Three days later Gatemouth died.
Last time I heard about him it was after a storm in Gulf flooded the
cemetary on the coast and took his coffin away. Did they ever find him? |

Yep you couldn't beat Gatemouth for big band swinging blues. He was a genius. I heard about the flood when it happened but don't know what came of it. That's amazing you have one of his guitars...is that the Washburn 335? |

Yes Washburn HB35. I have seen an old Washburn add with Gatemouth
holding his HB32 with broken off tone switch. That is the guitar I have.
Bought it from an owner of music shop in Louisiana who traded violin with
Gatemouth for that guitar. When Gatemouth was playing in Pflugerville
I asked him between sets about that story and he confirmed it. Guitar
has a lot of miles on it - it plays well but pots are a bit scratchy. |
