Hello All!
My name is Brian though most call me my screen name which is also my name.
I'm here to help Mark help you (and myself) achieve the greatness within.
A tiny bit of background:
I've been playing guitar from the age of 8. I got my musical start (and first paying gigs) funny enough as a polka drummer at the age of 4. I literally took over a wedding band slot from my grandfather who became ill and later died. I remember it well!
I discovered guitar on my own and fell in love. I still refer to it as 'my first true love' at 41.
The vast majority of my playing historically was hard rock / heavy metal in the SF bay area years ago where I began to understand I missed something along the way. Even having an internationally known little brother Jazz/Fusion keyboard player I still missed out on more mature elements of music.
At the same time, I discovered my aptitude for computer sciences and also learned that being a 'starving musician' was extremely overrated.
So I'm here with you now, a student of life and music and Mark like you. Hoping to achieve my dreams and desires still.
The most wonderful, endless thing about guitar is, it never ends! The learning, the evolving, the challenge.
I hope to make many new friends and get the opportunity to see us all grow together!

They sure did. Wedding gigs always seemed to work well. I did a 'wedding singer' bit for a few years. But not the reception, the wedding itself! I took home more $$$ from playing 1 wedding then I did playing 10 receptions. Why did I stop doing that? Oh yeah..weddings are boring!
And Polka...pfft, I really don't care. The children in my life have pretty much beaten any ego out of me. Not much shame left!
I suspect it's possible if it weren't for Polka, I may not be here doing this right now! _________________

Polka is actually of Czech origin and not Polish.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polka :
It originated in the middle of the 19th century in Bohemia,
and is still a common genre of Czech, Croatian and Slovenian
folk music;
...
Due to its name it is often mistakenly attributed to Poland.
--------------
Two most popular traditional dances that originated in Poland
are polonaise (polonez) and mazurka (mazurek). Others are
kujawiak, oberek and krakowiak.

Sorry woland, but to me it's who was taken over last! When it comes to Czech's and Pol's there is not redemption on who got their butt's kicked last. Each has had their fair share of ass kickings. So to at least I need to be respectful of each origin is as best as I can do. I'm half German BTW! _________________

Hmmmm..... being Polish I do not know how exactly to react to your
proposition of giving Poles so-inventorship of Polka because "they had
their butt kicked" in some recent history.
Let me just say that despite heroic effort of Polish troops fighting
alongside Allies on Western front (250,000 people altogether) Poles
were betrayed by United States and Britain at Yalta and Poland
was abandoned to endure 45 years of Soviet occupation.
But anyway - Bohemia was practically all German speaking around
the time Polka was invented so who knows... maybe Germans invented
Polka too.

I'm sorry woland, I was only being sarcastic. I do think you have a point, but in Germany it's called "Oom-pah" and really don't think it's much different other than some instrument variation.
So maybe being half German and half Polish, it was destiny! _________________

No problemo. I typed that message after working all night so it came
out a bit heavy-handed. Sarcasm does not verbalize well - you need
a bit of other non-verbal means to express it. That is why - in modern
world where people increasingly rely on texting or email to talk the
inability to detect sarcasm seems epidemic.
I hear you - my family is from Poland but most people with my last
name actually live in Germany so chances are I have some German
ancestor - after all I always found the sound of German language
quite appealing. But no as appealing as Klingon. Can you imagine
Kilingon "Ooom-pah" ????

Wherever it came from, and whatever you call it, it bored the heck out of me. BUT the money was worth it. I am not ashamed to admit that I was a musical prostitute.

JT I did realize you were actually born in Poland until I read your Introduction. You most certainly know better than I do!
And I have absolutely no interest in even attempting to imagine "Klingon Ooom-Pah", that sounds scary and possibly dangerous!

I'd never turn away wedding money out of boredom. There's just too much money to be made.
These days, in my area, being in a bar cover band, you can barely make enough money for gas to get home. I'm not in a wedding band, but I always have my eyes open, and I'd jump into one in a moment.
Boredom - I define that by what I do 9 - 5. Playing Any music - even the wedding schtick - is far superior than 95% of the 9-5 jobs in the universe.

I am so lucky, I have the best of both worlds. I love my day job, find if very exciting and since it pays the bills I get to play jazz.

You are lucky, but honestly it's not like you didn't earn it! They don't let just anyone fly those big boys!
I can honestly say I still really enjoy programming. Keeps me on my toes and thinking. Can't say I'm enjoying what I'm doing or where at the moment, but that's not permanent. _________________

It is like music, it's all about the path. A labor of love, not work. It was a lot more fun though before 9/11. The changes have been astounding.
