i was just wondering if you have a favorite song that you learned on your bass over your career. i think my all time favorite is the theme song to sanford and son.

That's a tough one. There are so many good bass lines.

I tend to like bass lines with great hooks. There are so many bass players that have created bass lines that set a groove and the substance of terriffic songs -- James Jamerson, Bernard Odum to name two.

I have always enjoyed bass lines that create a groove from simple elements. From "My Girl" (from a major pentatonic scale) to "Cold Sweat" (dominant seventh arpeggio and chromatic scale) to "Money" (chromatic scale). There is something magical that happens when terriffic music is created from simple elements.

Motown bass lines are usually very cool. Jamerson creates magic over a simple drum part with a strong backbeat.

I also like learning ostinatos that can be moved over various chord changes. There's real economy in that. Learn a simple line, and it can be tweaked and manipulated to work in a wide variety of situations.

yes james was a great bassplayer i just bought standing in the shadows of motown. and the box set of cds. working on grapevine. alot different then how ccr plays it. i play in a ccr tribute band called the revival if i started to play the song like james did theyd probably get lost. but at least i'll have fun

Check out the bass playing on Michael McDonald's "Motown" album. Updated versions of Motown classics with some great bass playing by Nathan East (and Larry Carlton on guitar, to boot). Classic Jamerson tunes.

did you ever listen to The New York Rock and Soul Revue, Live at The Beacon. donald fagen, michael mcdonald,boz scaggs,phoebe snow, great album. the revue players jeff young and the youngsters. lincoln schleifer on bass. its a must listen too!
