However, for lessons I record all of my raw audio directly to disc using a Tascam CD-RW750 burner, a little Mackie and a pair of old Yamaha reverbs (SPX 90 and REV 500) that I bought on eBay. Then I pop the finished disc into my Mac and edit in GB. It's been my best educational work to date, although I like to think that the content has a little something to do with that.
When it comes to recording and your tools, it's pretty subjective and just depends on what you're trying to do. All for now...

Lenny,
I'm a Pro tools user, but I have Audacity and GarageBand too.
I suggested Audacity as alternative in the 'Recording Your Work' thread;

I also mentioned it in my reply to Dean in this thread. Mark offered a
a great discussion on the Snowball and GarageBand in the 'Snowball USB Mic' thread;

He also pointed out the 'LightSnake' for electric.

Larry,
The LightSnake (http://www.soundtech.com) is a guitar cable that features a standard 1/4 inch plug on one side and a USB on the other. About $40. You just plug it in and start recording. It's that simple. Of course, there are other fancier and more expensive USB interfaces, but you've heard my jazz and blues recordings and are well aware of the tone quality I'm getting with this setup. All for now...

Always choose the path with the 'best result' and least resistance.

Hi Larry, Audacity is dirt simple. It doesn't have the bells and whistles that Pro Tools has. But it's easy to use. I have gone low tech, because it gets me to record more, which is more in tune with my goals (I'm not trying to become a producer -- just a player). I can only vouch for the Windows edition, however.
I mike the amp by placing the Snowball as close as I can get it to the speaker -- aimed directly at the center of the cone, on axis (cardiod setting -- the Snowball has an omnidirectional setting also) -- as close as possible. Works like a charm. |
