In some of the threads I noticed Mark saying that he (and Henry Johnson as well) usually practice dry (no amp). This is quite the opposite of what other players sometimes say about achieving good tone. Their point is that you inevitably pick harder than while using an amp, etc., etc. Any comments, thoughts on this???

YOu need to ask Mark to clarify but I thought he was talking about
"dry soloing" ie. playing thru changes without backup track which
forces you to stick to harmony and imply it in your solo.

Actually, you are right in my definition of "dry improv" as improvising sans accompaniment. But Jiri is also correct that, like HJ, I do almost all of my archtop practicing unamplified. It might be different if I was using a solid-body electric with little or no acoustic volume, but I find that I'm able to address picking/fingerstyle dynamics and nuances effectively without the amp, and once amplified those elements really spring to life.

At least that's what works for me and as the saying goes, "If it ain't broke..." Wink
