"Jazz Improv Magazine"

Jazz Improv & Vision Music!

Jazz Improv Magazine is widely recognized as the leading publication for the diehard jazz enthusiast. Each magazine is packed with 300 pages of interviews, lessons, transcriptions, record reviews, etc, plus an audio CD that reflects the contents of that particular edition.

I've been writing for this terrific publication for some time now, and in retrospect it only seems fitting that my first column appeared in an issue with one of my main jazz guitar mentors on the cover. My thanks to Publisher Eric Nemeyer for his original welcome and kind words.

The Guitar Pages...

Each edition of Jazz Improv now includes The Guitar Pages, a section devoted exclusively to guitarists and co-authored by Wolf Marshall, Henry Johnson, and yours truly.

The upcoming edition will focus on the music of jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery, and my column this time will be "The Hidden Power of Octaves." Students and fans are well aware of my penchant for octaves and Montgomery's influence on me, so...

Here are a few unreleased MP3 recordings that showcase some of my recent octave work, interpreting melodies/heads of classic blues, pop, ballad, and bebop standards:

Things Ain't What      Sunny      Misty      The Flintstones

Note: The licks and concepts used in these solos are taught in the Swing Blues wing of Vision Music's Lessons by Mail program. If you love blues in your jazz, click here for program/course details.

Visit our Guitar Talk pages and check out more of my recordings (plus vocal narratives).

What? Me Interviewed?

As many of my students and fans know, I've conducted many interviews with great players during the past few years, so I was understandably thrilled to be on the "other side" when Jazz Improv ran a story on my career. Recently they granted us permission to release it.

Benson cover? Perfect! The story is now available in PDF format for members and fans of our website. It offers insights into my background as a player, educator, composer and creator of Vision Music. To access/download the interview, click here. I hope you enjoy it!
