Vision Music presents, for your learning pleasure...

Creating A Sound

by Muriel Anderson

Meet Muriel Anderson...

Award-winning fingerstyle virtuoso, educator, and student of guitar legends Chet Atkins and Christopher Parkening, Muriel Anderson brings us a lesson based on one of her many original compositions. In "Creating A Sound" you'll learn how to enrich your music by borrowing techniques from around the world.

About the Artist...

Muriel Anderson was raised in a musical family in Downers Grove, Illinois. Her mother taught piano and her grandfather had played saxophone in John Philip Sousa's band. Her mother often played a piano ragtime standard called "Nola," so Muriel learned it on her guitar. Years later, she took that song to the National Guitar Picking Championships and became the first nylon-string guitarist and first female guitarist to win.

She is still the only woman to hold the title. Muriel fell in love with the guitar at an early age and learned every style available to her, culminating in classical guitar study at DePaul University. She went on to study with classical virtuoso Christopher Parkening and with the late Nashville legend Chet Atkins. She has composed music since about age 6, and has written music for guitar and orchestra as well as songs, solo compositions, and her new work for guitar and cello.

All-Star Guitar Night...

The "All-Star Guitar Night" originated in 1993 as an informal get-together after the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention and NAMM show, two simultaneous events which brought together some of the finest guitarists in the world.

In an informal atmosphere, sitting around the pool playing music for each other and with each other, inevitably the best music happened. The "All-Star Guitar Night" has enjoyed resounding success in bringing that same magic in front of an audience. Read more?

Vision Music's DVD Review...

This great event is held annually in two locations, Nashville and Los Angeles. One of the most recent performances was captured on DVD, and we've had the good fortune and privilege to review the recording for Homespun Tapes (www.homespuntapes.com).

Let me hopefully be the first to tell you that this performance is downright incredible, simply jaw-dropping if you happen to appreciate great fingerstyle guitar music, regardless of genre. Muriel is in fine form on three selections, including the classic "Vincent" by her mentor, the late Chet Atkins, performed as a very sensitive, moving duet with Tommy Emmanuel, who earlier plays an emotional, high-energy rendition of Mason Williams' "Classical Gas." Anderson also treats the audience to her original piece, "Angelina Baker," in which she simulates an entire bluegrass band on guitar.

Other outstanding performances include Buster B. Jones and Thom Bresh playing a hot rendition of "Cannonball Rag," "Flying Home" by the marvelous Stanley Jordan, a beautiful version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" done by Laurence Juber, and so on. In addition to the solo guitar performances, there's a nice blues jam involving many of the all-stars. All in all, this is a great DVD to pick up and enjoy over and over again, and Muriel Anderson is to be applauded for bringing such a wonderful cast of virtuosos together during a period of contemporary music when you often have to look long and very hard to find something truly worth hearing. Highly recommended. Five stars!
